Photoshop vs Fireworks? Interviews with Professionals

E-mail Print PDF

This was an article I read that was posted on Digital Web Magazine that does a great job answering the age old question: Photoshop V.S. Fireworks. I hope you enjoy the article as much as I did.

Photoshop. Fireworks. If you’re a serious web designer (and not using the GIMP) you’re going to be using one or the other. But which is best?

As an argument for Photoshop, I would say that it is the graphics software that has always catered to the pixel. All of our displays (currently) are pixel-based, and I feel very comfortable working with pixels.

I recently had the opportunity to talk to eight talented web designers about the applications that are crucial to their work. Half use Photoshop, while the other four prefer Fireworks. In the past, such questioning might have been akin to debating PC vs Mac but, since the Adobe acquisition of Macromedia, it is now less about brand loyalty and more about efficiency.

What graphics program should I start with? Fireworks, Photoshop, Illustrator?

Recently I received an email from one of the Yahoo groups I subscribe to and thought that it might be a great article for anyone getting started working with image editors.

The question from Claire is below:

Hi, guys. I would like to learn to design my own web pages and to design my own artwork for them. I have learned (x)html and css, and that's pretty much all I know so far.

Today hubbie gave me a great gift--a Cintiq 12wx. I'm very excited, but the problem is I don't know anything about Photoshop or Illustrator or Fireworks or whatever. I also don't know what is the best equipment to use--I know some of you use three monitors at once. What does that do for you?

Since I have the Cintiq, I think I would like to focus right now on learning to do vector art, although I don't even know what "vector" means. I just heard it was a good format in which to make illustrations to sell. What equipment do I need? What programs should I download? Where do I start?

Thanks for any advice and tips!!!!

What Is The Purpose For Your Site?

E-mail Print PDF

I had a meeting with a client a few weeks ago and I shocked myself completely.

The client requested that I design a Flash intro for his site. Before I could think twice the words had already come out of my mouth.

"Why do you want a Flash intro for your site?" I asked.

His response was that he wanted to outline his company's offerings.

So I responded "Knowing that most of your viewers are on dial up connections, you'll be cutting out over half of your possible clients by doing this. Doesn't the site itself tell the viewers what you do? Wasn't that the purpose of building the site in the first place?"
